As the Head of Property, you will build and lead Mitti Insurance’s ISR Property underwriting function in Australia. establishing a profitable, well-underwritten portfolio of ISR and related commercial lines while developing the team, broker relationships, and market credibility that will underpin long-term growth. The Head of Property sets the underwriting strategy, owns portfolio performance, and shapes what Mitti Insurance stands for in the Australian general insurance market.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Own end-to-end portfolio performance across all general property lines in Australia —

    setting underwriting strategy, managing risk quality and profitability, and delivering

    against agreed loss ratio and premium growth targets.

  • Lead and develop the ISR underwriting team, building a high-performing culture of

    technical excellence, continuous improvement, and clear accountability.

  • Drive broker engagement and new business development, establishing Mitti Insurance

    as a credible and preferred ISR partner across target segments in the Australian

    market.

  • Set and maintain underwriting guidelines, authority frameworks, and risk appetite for

    the ISR portfolio, aligned with reinsurance arrangements and Mitti Insurance’s overall

    risk strategy.

  • Collaborate with actuarial, claims, and product teams to ensure pricing adequacy,

    coverage alignment, and claims experience feed back into underwriting decisions in a

    closed loop.

  • Ensure all underwriting activity complies with Australian Securities and Investments

    Commission (ASIC) requirements, Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL)

    conditions, and Mitti Insurance internal risk and compliance framework.

  • Represent Mitti Insurance in broker and industry forums, building the brand and

    reputation of the ISR portfolio across the Australian market.

Required Skills & Experience:
Technical skills:

  • Deep technical expertise in commercial liability lines — General Property, ISR, —

    demonstrated through hands-on underwriting of complex and large risks.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage an ISR portfolio from a profit and loss (P&L)

    perspective, including pricing strategy, capacity management, and reinsurance

    utilisation.

  • Strong working knowledge of Australian insurance regulatory requirements, including

    Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL) compliance obligations and Australian

    Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) conduct standards.

  • Track record of setting underwriting guidelines and authority frameworks, including

    managing delegated authority arrangements and binding authority agreements.

  • Analytical capability to interpret loss experience, exposure data, and market trends to

    inform underwriting strategy and test pricing adequacy.

    technical underwriting, people leadership, and stakeholder engagement without losing

  • Develops the people around them — creates a team environment where underwriters

    build technical capability, take on greater authority, and feel real ownership of their

    decisions.

AI skills:

  • Uses AI tools to accelerate risk assessment, portfolio analysis, and market research

    reducing manual effort and surfacing insights faster than traditional methods.

  • Evaluates AI-assisted outputs with sound underwriting judgment — validates and

    refines AI-generated risk summaries or pricing signals rather than accepting them

    uncritically.

  • Actively explores how emerging AI capabilities can improve underwriting workflows

    and brings relevant tools and ideas to the team.
