Job Title: IT Engineer
Location: Cambridge
Type: Full-Time (on-site)
Coherence Neuro is a highly interdisciplinary neurotechnology company solving some of the most challenging biological and medical problems that remain unmet. Our goal is to develop technologies that significantly increase the quality and length of life for those with debilitating and deadly cancers in the brain and body. We are backed by the best global venture capital firms, and are scaling our team across multiple sites to bring our products to those who need it as quickly and safely as possible. If you're driven to push the boundaries of engineering and science and want to help build something that genuinely changes lives, we want to hear from you. We value diversity and encourage applicants from all backgrounds to join us in our mission. Learn about our team here!
We are seeking a hands-on, organised IT Engineer to own, build out, and scale the IT systems and information security function at Coherence Neuro. You would own our IT infrastructure: account administration and identity environment, our access control model, our network and server infrastructure, data and file organisation, AI tooling and workflows, and how we select, roll out, use, and govern software across the company. As a medical device company operating under an ISO 13485 quality management system, how we structure, secure, and control access to our data matters enormously, and you will work closely with both our AI, Infrastructure, and Modelling Lead, and our Head of Quality.
Key Responsibilities
Administer our core IT environment — identity, account administration, licensing, groups, and security settings — and maintain the company network, server, and remote access infrastructure.
Manage our email domain and its underlying configuration, so that new software and services can be added cleanly as the company grows.
Design and maintain a clear, scalable structure for how our files and documents are stored and organised, and support our eQMS data architecture.
Own user access management across all systems — e.g., group permissions and restricted access to sensitive areas — working closely with our Head of Quality on how controlled information is classified and protected.
Apply practical cybersecurity across the organisation: identity and access management, MFA, endpoint hardening, patching, backup and recovery, and security awareness.
Coordinate and maintain our use of AI tools (e.g. Claude, ChatGPT) and Agentic workflows to maximise efficiency while keeping our data secure.
Lead the IT side of software rollouts and migrations, and act as central administrator for our software estate and integrations.
Optimise and coordinate how we use software at Coherence setting org-wide defaults and configurations that get the most out of each tool while keeping us secure.
Be the technical presence on the ground in Cambridge, resolving issues in person when that is the fastest route to a solution, with some overlap with US working hours to support colleagues at our US site.
Required Qualifications and Skills
4+ years' experience in an IT engineer, systems administration, or infrastructure engineering role. A degree in a relevant field is desirable but not required — demonstrated experience and relevant certifications are equally welcome.
Strong hands-on administration of Microsoft 365 and Entra ID, including user accounts, groups, licensing, and permissions.
Demonstrated experience designing and administering SharePoint and OneDrive structures and permission models at an organisational level.
Experience managing domains and DNS, and onboarding new software and services onto a company domain.
Experience setting up and coordinating AI tool usage to optimise company workflows while keeping sensitive data secure.
Practical cybersecurity experience: identity and access management, MFA and SSO, endpoint hardening and device management, VPN administration, backups, and security awareness.
Experience working in a regulated environment, ideally a medical device company operating an ISO 13485 quality management system, with a working understanding of controlled documents, records retention, and why data integrity and access control matter.
Experience administering a broad SaaS estate (e.g. Slack, Zoom, Notion, Office), including provisioning, SSO, and licence management across Windows, Mac, and Linux systems.
Experience supporting networking, VPN, and server infrastructure, and troubleshooting confidently under pressure.
Excellent communication skills and patience — able to explain technical issues clearly to non-technical colleagues, and to prioritise sensibly when several things need attention at once.
Highly organised and self-directed, and comfortable being the person who owns IT in a fast-moving and rapidly scaling company.
Bonus Skills
Certifications such as CompTIA Security+, Microsoft 365 or Azure administrator certifications, or ITIL.
Experience with data classification and sensitivity labelling, e.g. Microsoft Purview.
Familiarity with UK/EU GDPR and the handling of sensitive clinical or research data.
Experience with Cyber Essentials, Cyber Essentials Plus, or ISO 27001.
Experience with QMS software validation, or computerised system validation (CSV/CSA) of IT infrastructure and software systems.
Scripting experience (PowerShell, Python, or Bash) for automating routine administration.
Experience with Linux servers and desktops alongside Windows and macOS.
Experience supporting a company through a period of rapid headcount growth.
Reporting Structure:
This role reports directly to the AI, Infrastructure, and Modelling Lead, and works closely with the Head of Quality on data classification, access control, and compliance.
Benefits:
Competitive salary and share options.
Matched pension
Professional development support and training opportunities
Flexible working hours and travel opportunities (we have sites in Australia, UK, and US!)
A chance to work on impactful, life-changing technologies in a dynamic, innovative environment.
