What you’d be doing in this role
As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.
At the moment, this role is focused on:
- Leading impactful projects: You’ll own challenging infrastructure problems end-to-end. By understanding how engineers use our platform, you’ll design and build practical solutions that improve reliability, developer velocity and autonomy.
- Driving architectural decisions: You’ll design scalable, maintainable services and contribute to technical proposals and decision records that set us up for long‑term success.
- Shaping Core Infrastructure direction: You’ll contribute to the roadmap for our Provisioning team, highlighting opportunities, validating approaches and helping keep our platform solutions current with cloud best practices.
- Enabling others: You’ll help infrastructure teams deliver secure, resilient systems in a complex, distributed environment—removing blockers and amplifying great ideas.
You're probably a match if
- You have proven experience (6+ years) as a Software Engineer with a track record of delivering complex, large-scale software projects in the cloud, and are comfortable coding in Go, Python and/or Java.
- You have a background in cloud platforms, with a strong understanding of distributed systems, IaC, PaaS, containerisation technologies (e.g., Kubernetes) as well as public cloud providers (AWS must, GCP nice-to-have) and broad infrastructure functions (e.g., CI/CD pipelines, automation, site reliability, security, etc)
- You have excellent problem-solving and debugging skills, with the ability to identify and resolve complex technical issues.
- You have strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders, both technical and non-technical.
- You have a passion for staying current with the latest cloud and platform-specific technologies and trends
- You have a no-blame mentality, you lead by example and promote Canva and Engineering values
About the team
This role sits within the Core Infrastructure Group. Canva’s intuitive suite of design products is powered by our large distributed infrastructure group. We’re constantly setting large and ambitious goals and thus, are looking for an experienced Engineering Lead to join our dynamic group and play a key role in delivering the right things at speed and scale.
Core Infra Engineering at Canva is about reducing the complexity burden of using the Cloud, and in this position, you’ll be responsible for ensuring the impactful work done by various teams is cohesive and aligned in reaching the group's vision. Apart from providing technical direction, you’ll spend time influencing, leading by example, and actively contributing to the engineering strategy. You’ll ensure we continue to offer secure and reliable products while managing debt and delivery tradeoffs. All of this focused on delivering a delightful experience to our internal customers.
Our platforms support engineers across the company to: provision, release, run, and operate cloud workloads. We do all this in the simplest and most secure way possible. What we create frees engineers from having to worry about what goes on under the hood, allowing them to produce their best work.
